I’m pleased to announce that we’ve expanded our navigator service to the Appeal Division. This is part of our mission to provide better access to justice (A2J).

We introduced the navigator service last year. It supports self-represented appellants with their Canada Pension Plan Disability appeals at the Income Security General Division. The navigator service helps these appellants better understand and navigate the appeal process and allows them to participate fully in their appeal.

Building on this success, we’re now offering the navigator service for all types of appeals at the Appeal Division.

Navigators work one-on-one with self-represented appellants (people who don’t have professional representation). While staying neutral, navigators explain:

  • the appeal process;
  • the role of everyone involved;
  • what the decision-maker can take into consideration; and
  • what to expect at the hearing.

Navigators are there to help people through the process and answer their questions. When people know what to expect and feel prepared, the process is quicker and they have a better experience.

Over time, we plan to expand the navigator service to other types of Income Security appeals and some types of Employment Insurance appeals at the General Division.
