As part of our ongoing commitment to improve access to justice (A2J), we’ve expanded our navigator service to include Employment Insurance (EI) group appeals at the General Division. The data from our navigator study told us that navigators improve the appeal experience for appellants.

When 2 or more people from the same workplace appeal the same issue or issues, we may handle their appeals as a group. A group appeal can contain a large number of appeals that need to move through the process together. This can be challenging and cause delays. To make this process more efficient, we now have navigators handling these types of appeal.

Navigators assigned to EI group appeals have a slightly different role from other navigators at the Social Security Tribunal.

EI group appeal navigators:

  • manage all the appeals in the group, including those with a professional representative
  • coordinate the logistics of all the appeals in the group so that they move through the appeal process together
  • make sure that each appeal file contains all the required documents
  • answer questions from all parties and representatives

This ensures efficiency and prevents delays in getting a decision.
