Ethics and accountability

As part of Canada’s administrative justice system, the Social Security Tribunal is committed to public ethics, accountability and transparency. We recently took two significant steps to strengthen that commitment:

• We reviewed and updated our Code of Conduct for Tribunal members. We already had a Code of Conduct, but we needed to make it more relevant to the work our members do. We also made it easier for readers to understand what the Tribunal expects of its members. This document describes the standards of behaviour that members must follow as independent and impartial decision makers.
• We established a formal complaints process for people who feel a Tribunal member has behaved contrary to the Code of Conduct. This is a new mechanism at the Tribunal. It sets out a simple and fair process that will guide our handling of complaints under the updated Code of Conduct.

We developed these tools in consultation with stakeholders through our Income Security Appeals Consultative Committee and our Employment Insurance Appeals Consultative Committee. Once we’ve used these tools for a while, we’ll check back in with stakeholders to gather more feedback.
