Social Security Tribunal of Canada

Average start-to-finish times

See how long a typical appeal takes, on average, for the following kinds of appeals that go to a hearing:

  • Canada Pension Plan (CPP) – disability
  • Other CPP
  • Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) and Old Age Security (OAS)

The average doesn’t count appeals that don’t have a hearing, such as appeals that are settled (when the parties agree on the outcome). These usually take less time.

The start-to-finish time is measured from the day the notice of appeal is filed to the day the decision is sent. The length of some steps within this overall timeline is outside of our control. For example, sometimes parties need more time to submit their evidence or arguments, and some appeals go to the Tax Court of Canada before a member can make the final decision. Your appeal may be resolved sooner or later than the average. Average start-to-finish times are different from service standards.
