How we work within government
The Social Security Tribunal is independent from Service Canada, Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), and the Canada Employment Insurance Commission (CEIC).
Parliament made the Tribunal independent, so that Canadians who appeal a denial of benefits can get a neutral decision about their case.
At the same time, the Tribunal collaborates with Service Canada, ESDC, and CEIC so that together we can make the appeals process accessible and easy to use.
We have added a new web page that outlines how we work within government, and how we safeguard the Tribunal’s independence. It also explains other aspects of how we work, such as:
- The role of federal government departments and how they intersect with the Tribunal
- What Tribunal members do
- What our decision-making process is like
Accessible justice is a top priority for us. Being open and clear about how we work within government is an essential part of that.
