Getting appeals started faster

Month

2019

We recently made it easier to start an appeal at the General Division. This initiative was very successful. Since we made this change, the average number of days for an appeal to get started after we receive the Notice of Appeal has dropped dramatically:

  • from 59.9 to 1.6 days (97% decrease) for Employment Insurance (EI) appeals;
  • from 44.0 to 8.4 days (81% decrease) for Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security appeals

Building on that success at the General Division (GD), we are also making it easier for an application to the Appeal Division to get started. Certain information is no longer required for your appeal to begin, removing unnecessary delays. We now start an appeal to the Appeal Division if we have the following information:

  • the date or file number of the GD decision, or a copy of the decision;
  • the grounds (reasons) for the appeal;
  • full name;
  • phone number; and
  • address.

What’s more, we will reach out to you to fill in any gaps as quickly as possible, so your appeal can move faster.

These changes reduce the burden on Canadians who use our system. It also means you will wait less time for a decision on your appeal.
